Mitsuko had gotten a strange text on her cellphone that said: “Meet me. You know the place Michi.” It startled her to be honest. These days, not very many people call her by her original nickname that Tyr had given her, because those same people that did had moved on in their lives. As mentioned earlier Tyr had dubbed her Michi because her name Mitsuko was a little long and a bit hard to pronounce, and once he gave her that nickname, well everyone else in their group of friends followed suit as well as some of her immediate family members.
There was one other person that called her Michi. Her ex-boyfriend from high school Neji. She hadn’t seen him in over a decade, perhaps even two decades by now if the math was done correctly but still the point was that their broken relationship had no closure, and the lack of closure bothered Mitsuko for years, even though she should be proud that she did move forward with her life, and stopped waiting for the man that she loved dearly at the time as a teenaged girl.
Now that she was a mother and wife, Mitsuko had understood that teenaged love doesn’t always last a lifetime. Sometimes people do marry their high school sweethearts, but that was a rarity because people change a lot as they take the first steps into adulthood, go in different directions, creating goals for themselves, and discovering who they want to become. As life ebbs and flows like the shining sea so do romantic teen relationships.
In hindsight, Neji and Mitsuko’s breakup was inevitable because they were both 16 years old when they had met and got together shortly after, but at 16 your first love/romance can be seen as your everything. Your whole world even. That’s why when the breakup happened without even as much as a conversation or a goodbye it haunted Mitsuko’s memories. She had given her love so freely to this man, that to never see him again after their last kiss in the Garden of Dreams? It hurt. Her heart was with Zero now yes, but there was a part of her heart-- albeit a small tiny piece of her heart that she needed to heal.
She needed that conversation.
She needed to tell Neji how she felt before she could put their past behind them and to let him go for good. She had to do what was best for her mental health, and before she talked to her husband about uprooting their family to another place. So when she got this text from an unknown number, she took the chance immediately to meet up with this person who had texted her. Already Mitsuko had put the pieces together of WHO had finally tracked her down, and sent that message--- and that skillset could be because she was a Cipher had learned so much about information decoding from Zero and Jean, and how to think critically without her emotions skewing the information, but regardless she knew.
Neji had finally resurfaced in her life and if this conversation was going to happen, then Mitsuko had to take this chance because it won’t present itself ever again. Even if this conversation with her ex was going to be a full blown argument due to unresolved feelings, and unsaid words, unheard heartache then so be it.
At least she was going to get that closure.
Mitsuko drove to her high school Diabolic Domain that was located in the Forest Country of Ianne which was about two hours from her home in Sougen. As she drove, she remembered the first time she had met Neji. Neji had seen her ice skating at the skating rink, and they had started chatting immediately afterwards. He was charming, flirtatious, but also polite and kind towards her. Mitsuko remembers that when they were dating he’d always look at her with adoration, admiration. And because of how he treated her, she didn’t expect Neji to just up and leave without a word- she expected much more respect than that.
Just for Neji, she stayed longer at Diabolic Domain, taking extra courses just so he had extra time to come back to her, while the rest of her classmates were graduating and moving on. But then Mitsuko had received word that her family’s temple Summer’s Eve back in Tokyo, Japan wanted to be reopened, as the citizens needed another place to pray, so she couldn’t wait for him anymore.
Life circumstances had forced her to move forward before she was even ready. She ran her family’s temple for years, before she couldn’t financially manage it as the costs were just astronomically high. The only thing that came out of the experience that was good, is that she reunited with her older brother Jake.
So much time has passed now, that Mitsuko wasn’t sure if she was sad, mad, furious or even all three, but she had heard that sometimes when you are in a new relationship with someone else, or even married and have children, your exes can sometimes return in your life-- whether it’s because you bump into them at a high school reunion, or at a store, it was sometimes a thing that could happen.
And it usually happens when that person has moved on.
Her relationship with Yuuki didn’t have as much impact on her life so she wasn’t hurt by that breakup at all. She accepted it and moved forward peacefully. But her relationship with Neji was different. They dated for about a year or two so at that point had known each other quite well.
When Mitsuko parked her car outside of the school, she went to the one place she always loved. The Garden of Dreams. Ironically her first kiss with Neji was here, but so was their last kiss. It was heartbreaking in a poetic way. When she arrived he wasn’t there, but she stood in the center of the garden, and waited.
Then she heard his footsteps behind her.
