Grief is complicated and some think that it is a negative emotion that should just go away, however Mitsuko understands that it doesn’t work like that. Grief becomes a part of you and integrated into life as time passes. As happy as she was with her life and grateful for all the wonderful things that have happened over the years-- her marriage, the birth of her children, her friendships with countless people Mitsuko was missing her godparents and her mom today. Her godparents gave her sanctuary when her mom died and she was separated from her siblings. Mitsuko’s godparents made sure that the trauma that she went through didn’t impact her ability to love, to show everlasting kindness and to open her life and heart to others.
She was raised by these wonderful people and not only did her godparents give love and support, they gave Zero that same kindness and watched from afar as their friendship began to bloom from the month that he stayed with them, and when Zero was kidnapped from their old house that night many decades ago when he was eight, Mitsuko remembered how much she cried for her best friend. She wanted him back, and within one night he was taken from her. He was ripped from her life and she was lonely after that. Maybe in addition to being a very kind person by nature, that loneliness lit a fire in her heart and wanted to make sure that everyone that she met, experienced kindness no matter what that person was gong through in their lives--even if a friendship was never formed, but a brief crossing of paths.
Maybe the amnesia that she had throughout her teenage years was a blessing in disguise so that way Mitsuko could grow as a person before she reunited with Zero once she became an adult. All of her life events served a purpose as painful as they all were- they still made her strong, kinder, it didn’t harden her heart but made it softer, and being who she was led her to her husband. It drew in a few frogs certainly, but the one man that she loved with all of her soul-- Zero was the very first person that she called a friend, the very first person she showed kindness to--- he came back to her. Now they were married and had a family of their own.
They had everything they could ever want.
But the grief in her heart over her precious losses was a part of her, and she finally was going to express that at her godparents gravesite. She spent many years smiling, laughing, helping people, but now she was going to acknowledge her grief and not run from it. She was going to honor the memory of her godparents, and tell them how much she missed them, and how thankful she was to them for everything they had given her, and Zero, about her marriage to him, and about her two children. Mitsuko believed that even though Zero was only with her godparents for a month, he learned a lot from them. He learned about kindness. He learned about what love was and how it felt to be cared for and not harmed by the adults who are responsible for his care.
Zero learned about genuine friendship during the month too. Mitsuko never ever left his side, and if he had a nightmare she’d tell him a fun fantasy story. With dragons and heroes. With magic and endless possibilities. Mitsuko showed Zero that while it was okay to feel scared, it was also okay to feel safe. Sometimes she and Zero would build forts using the comforters in the old house and have their own secret club where he would watch her draw, and try to draw with her. Her godparents made his life better, even if it was for a short time and she was grateful that he had the chance to meet them and be with them. When her godparents were slowly dying due to natural causes, they each told Mitsuko to keep believing. That she would see Zero again one day. Based on what they learned about him while Zero was in their home, they could tell that he was a feisty little guy, but was also impacted by their god daughter. Greatly.
They were right. Mitsuko did end up reuniting with Zero in adulthood and since that day they never ever let each other go. As the memories of the four of them flashed in her mind she cried.
There were times where she wanted to call them on the phone to ask for their advice about motherhood, but she couldn’t call them. Sometimes she felt lonely whenever her godparents entered her thoughts, and that was healthy. Sometimes she felt happy when she recalled memories with them- that was also healthy. There was no right or wrong way to go about grief but it was time for Mitsuko to acknowledge it and give it a voice.
Today she was going to honor their memory as well as herself for moving forward. Mitsuko gathered a few balloons, flowers, a few photos and off she went to their resting place to do something solemn on this 21st anniversary of their passing in a hidden place in Ianne Forest. That hidden place was protected by her angelic ability so that no one could disrupt where her loved ones were eternally resting. She was very sad today, but she hoped that talking with her deceased godparents, and updating them on her life will help lift her spirits. She did have a lot to be thankful for.
There was a tranquility that existed in this part of the forest, and it soothed her soul. While she couldn’t casually come to this very spot often she was glad that she could visit once a year to remember. The flowers Mitsuko had with her were white lilies and chrysanthemums-two flowers associated with grief and mourning in Japanese culture.
Mitsuko sat on her knees quietly and she just started talking. “You know.. it’s never really easy for me to visit. It’s still hard even after 21 years. But there’s a lot I want to share with the both of you. I have two children. Want to know who the father is? It’s Zero! Who would’ve thought that our bond would lead to us getting married as adults, and having babies. You both were right. While I did cry a lot after Zero was taken from us that night, we did end up reuniting later on in life. Now we have all of these memories. Pictures. I even have pictures when we were both little. Embracing innocence. Love. Kindness.”
On the grass the angel laid out a number of photos from the past and present. Life really does move forward after a passing of a loved one. It’s never easy and the grief stays with you, and sometimes your heart feels like it’s heavy often especially during milestones, and anniversaries. It never gets easier, and it’s important to acknowledge how it feels. “I miss mom too. Sometimes I want to call you all and ask for advice about motherhood. I surely felt that way when I was pregnant with my son. I was so young then, and newly married. I didn’t know what I was doing. I.. probably made a few mistakes with Matthew, but I’m so glad I have my kids. They are teenagers now too! He and Savannah are growing up really quickly. “
Mitsuko then sat in silence for a while and just then some butterflies greeted her. Butterflies were usually a symbol of loved ones from the other side. Her loved ones were acknowledging her and comforting her mourning heart. “Little Hello’s from Heaven.” She cried right then. "I miss all of your voices..."
